Chapter Fourteen

I'm in a foul mood as I head down to the dining area for breakfast. Bad dreams, the pain in my wing, and my talk with Kendric doing nothing but aggravating me further, as I slowly limp down the castle halls. It’s so bad that I find myself replaying our conversation, but instead of allowing my vulnerability to show, I imagine all the snarky things I wish I had said instead.

"May I assist you, Lorelei?"

My hand flies to my chest when Daruk appears from the shadows, and I don't answer him for a second as I feel my racing heart crash against my palm. He'd just appeared out of nowhere, and almost gave me a heart attack, so I purse my lips as I glare at him.

"You know what? Forget the bell. I'm going to buy you one of those wind suits from the nineties. You'll never be able to sneak up on me again in one of those."

Daruk chuckles at my joke and seeing his relaxed face, some of my earlier anger slips away. I still don't feel good, but it's hard to be mad at someone as patient and kind as Daruk. Plus, I literally owe him my life.

"For you Lorelei, I would," he replies, and looking into his serious eyes, I believe him. There's just a sincerity about Daruk that makes me trust him.

"Good to know. And since you're being such a good sport, I'll even let you pick out the colors. I'm thinking purple and neon green would look great with your skin, but feel free to interject. Who am I to steer you away from the reds and oranges if that's what you'd prefer to wear."

His laugh seems to roll through me and lessen my aches. It's not as if it's magical, but something about seeing someone you care about happy, makes things appear better. Or at least, give the illusion of better. When I take another step and feel another spike of pain, the illusion falls.

"Come on, Lorelei. Let me help. You may hurt yourself worse if you're not careful." When he offers me his arm, I immediately slide mine into it and admire how nice the fabric of his three-piece charcoal grey suit feels. The material looks heavy and restricting, but the touch is so smooth that one could forget it's even there. Plus, he's right. It does make walking easier without having to stop after each step to fight through the pain.

"So...," I say, searching my mind for something to talk about other than how nice he looks and feels. "Kendric's back." It's lame even to me, but if Daruk thinks so, he has the manners to not point it out. He just continues to hold onto my arm as we walk side by side down the hall.

"Yes, I didn’t realize you’d heard yet. He returned last night. I'm sure he would have come by to tell you himself, but it was late and he probably thought you were sleeping. He doesn't care if he wakes up the rest of us.
